Canons Ashby House Mystery photo!

Took this photo of a very old and dusty bookcase in a large library in Canons Ashby house in Daventry UK. The photo attracted me because of the repeating patterns made by the books and the tricky contrasts of light and dark made by this dimly lit library. My surprise when I looked at this photo later was the small portrait left lying on the bottom of the shelf. Who is this guy! Unlikely to go back to this house so I will suppose ill never know. Liked the end product of the photo though. This was just a flying visit and one of the great things about the National Trust UK. I was attracted to the colours in this old house, in particular the stonework.Canons Ashby has been the family home of the Drydens since Elizabethan times, located near Daventry, UK

Err..could you add a caption please. Is this Cochin in the 1960s? And where the photo from? looking forward to your reply…
May 4th, 2012 at 5:44 am
Yes , this is one of the few images I have forgotten to add the caption, excusme. It was in sept. or okt. in the year 1960 coming by ship from Melbourne. The photo is mine I made lots of them, time ago it tooks 33 days from Melbourne to Genoa with the called Ship Australia of the company LLoyd Triestino.
Well , I had to fix the whole album, just done. Maybe some image is of extremely interess for you.
May 4th, 2012 at 6:09 am
Pizzo… this is not Cochin. There are no hillocks near Cochin port. Also, those houses have extensive use of timber. May be Rangoon or Cambodia or Vietnam.
Your other photos of Cochin are really marvellous. I was born in cochin in 1976. Really great to see the "unseen" past of my city.
May 4th, 2012 at 6:23 am
Sorry mate I never travelled in Rangoon or Cambodia or Vietnam, that is Kochi in the year 1960 you were not even born. Or it must be outside Kochi.
May 4th, 2012 at 7:14 am
Hi Pizzodisevo,
Thank you very much for giving an interesting collection of my place from a distant past. I too can’t identify this as Kochi. There are no hillocks in Kochi and the construction of houses on wooden poles is not a familiar practise in Kochi. Your other photos show this.
May 4th, 2012 at 7:40 am
That was taken outside the harbour, and I controlled my dias again, time ago I numbered all carfully, I got not a mixup from my dias and all photos I have from Cochin are in my album. As sayed bevor I never travelled in Rangoon or Cambodia or Vietnam.

New reply to addressnik and Raphael V
I was coming from Singapore to Cochin, it tooks 5 days without seeing land and I am shure I took the pic bevor Cochin but exactly where I dont remember, it must be near the coast because I didn’t have a zoom. If I took the pic near or after Singapore it would be written on Singapore. I really hope we can clear up this ??? Question.
In Google I dind’t find any pic of Kochi around the year 1960, my son was there in 2004 and he dont has images taken from a ship as mine. Looking forward to fix this problem,
many greetings from Italy
Peter.
Here a satellite shot, Singapore – Cochin.

May 4th, 2012 at 7:58 am
I have added a closer image from google earth of cochin. The arrow shows the opening through which a ship approaches the port. May be I can provide some images from that position.
May 4th, 2012 at 8:11 am
Would be interesting to see some image from there, then we can see IF the little hills can be right on my pic. Thanks for your help.
The hills in the background on my pic does people confuse and thouse 2 smokestacks, was/were there houses built on piles in Cochin entering in the harbour? That’s the problem if 1960 was existing pilework in this zone. Looking forward for a good result, all together we will be able to find out where I took this image. Peter.
May 4th, 2012 at 8:37 am
I was born in Cochin in 1970 and lived the first 25 years of my life there. This picture is interesting, but I’m sure it isn’t Cochin. The style of building houses on poles was never common, and Cochin has no hill in the background. Could this be the coast of Sri Lanka or Malaysia?
May 4th, 2012 at 8:39 am
I hope somebody sees in Google Earth this image and can tell me where this is, somebody from Sri Lanka or Malaysia, perhaps you know how the coast looks like in Sri Lanka and if there are hills. Until now , only young persons wrote to me, may be an old mate like me do remember.
May 4th, 2012 at 9:00 am
I know what this place is? This is Kerlla or Kerala. The hill is known as kovalam hill in Kerala District.
May 4th, 2012 at 9:51 am
Are you shure? Why the ? . I would be happy if someboby has solved this ??? May be I will enter in the Kerala pool with this one.
PS. its now in the : Glimpses of Kerala pool.
http://www.flickr.com/groups/glimpsesofkerala/pool/
May 4th, 2012 at 10:35 am
Peter, I’m not so sure. It *might* be Kovalam. "Kerala" is the name of the state or province of India. Kochi is also a city in Kerala. Kovalam is in Trivandrum (tree-van-drum) district of Kerala.
Here are a few snaps of Kovalam: http://www.keralagreenery.org/leelabeach-kovalam-kerala.html
The hills seen in these pics dont seem so big. Maybe someone who lives in Kovalam can confirm.
May 4th, 2012 at 11:15 am
Deepu, thanks.
Now we can hope someone from Kovalam will see this image and finally say where it is.
I saw in Google Earth , behind Kovalam are hills and mountains up to 1000 meters.
I hope in the new pool: Glimpses of Kerala pool, somebody confirm it.
Greetings
Peter.

i have never seen or heard about the huts of these kind in kovalam, have u travelled to the north east..?, north east, (assam) has similar construction style..
May 4th, 2012 at 12:03 pm
Sorry, I never travelled in Assam.
I came by ship from Jakarta – Singapore and straigt to Cochin, saw Srilanka / Colombo , I remember we had very rough sea and it tooks 5 days Singapore – Cochin we saw no land, may be coming out from Singapore.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:47 pm
Pizzo, you can rule out Sri Lanka on this, as this is definitely not Sri Lanka. by looking at the style of the waterfront house I’m quite certain.
its very clear the houses in the pix are build on stilts, and this kind of architecture is more common in Malaysia ,very much alien to Sri Lanka though. i have seen such houses in Burma , on Irrawaddy too.
can this be Port Blair , in Andaman Islands? i’m not so sure of the geography of Andamans, but its likely the ship may had a port of call there.
May 4th, 2012 at 1:43 pm
Hey , This Is Sri Lanka,
The place called Galle, This is near Galle Town, and Galle Harbor,
The Hill is named "Hiniduma" (Hay Kok), Those 2 building is Schools,
I am 100% sure this is Sri LAnka and place Near Galle town .
May 4th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Hi.. in my searches I found some pictures of a village called Koh Panyi in Thailand that is built on stilts and has mountains in the background. Did your ship ever pass the coast of Thailand? Just look at this pic. It looks rather like your photo, but from a different angle. Think it could be the one?
May 4th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
Here’s one more: http://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_chap/527658887/
May 4th, 2012 at 3:01 pm
I am from trivandrum and this is definitely not Kovalam. This style of construction never existed in this part of india. I think its singapore / Indonasia.
May 4th, 2012 at 3:47 pm
@quizzer,
No I never passed in Thailand.
@FLu!D ((Offline for Exams)),
I guess too that must be coming out from Singapore by ship.
