Charles Erwin House II (1905)

Here’s the side entrance off the driveway. It’s hard to make out the lotus design in the door.
Also known as Lotus Lodge, this is one of George W. Maher’s best designs in terms of combining the Prairie style and his motif rhythm theory (in this case the lotus flower is a visual element carried throughout the house). Inside there is a vast entry hall with a central fireplace and an open staircase and dramatic curved balustrade. There are a number of original art glass windows, sconces, and ceiling fixtures. You might notice a driveway with a 50′s house. Originally this house was on 5 lots, but the original gate survives to show where the property originally ended. There’s also a pool in the back.The Erwins were an interesting family as they raised 10 children here. They were important architectural patrons. In 1892, they first lived in a William Van Kueren-designed house a few blocks away. In 1925, they commissioned John Van Bergen to design two new prairie style houses in Kenilworth, including one for their daughter. I have yet to post my photos of those buildings. Also, Erwin was in the advertising business and was the first to market Palmolive and the health benefits of Sunkist orange juice.

We don’t see it on the picture but this day was so windy… A friend of mine told me the day before "You know Arles but you don’t know Arles with its wind".
Well, I can say this is now the case 
This made this picture hard to capture as I was sitting on the edge of the river with a lot of wind: I could not stay aligned without dealing with my body.
I liked pretty much this idea of stacked houses, despite it’s only an optical effect.

For the skeptics out there…
I actually built something and brought it into the house. Okay, it’s not in final position (at the bottom of the stairs) and the hardest parts are yet to come. Still, it’s a start.
By the way, only the interior surfaces will be visible, so I made no attempt to hide the screws and other flaws on the outside.

I bought a 0.45x super wide angle attachment for my lens, and it’s one of the best things I’ve bought. I went on holiday to Ibiza and it certainly made getting pictures of all my friends and myself a lot easier.
You can get them very cheap (around £9) from eBay, and at the widest angle you get a fish-eye effect – they’re a lot of fun!
